Standard Rummy Deck

Rummy is typically played with a standard 52-card deck. In games with more players, two decks (including jokers) may be combined. The cards are divided into four suits:

Hearts (♥)

Diamonds (♦)

Clubs (♣)

Spades (♠)

Each suit contains 13 cards in the following order of rank:

A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K

In Rummy, the order goes from Ace to King. However, the Ace can act as either the lowest or highest card depending on the sequence:

Low sequence: A-2-3

High sequence: Q-K-A
(Note: A-2-3 and Q-K-A are valid, but K-A-2 is not)

 

Rummy Cards Order for Sequences and Sets

1. Sequences (Runs)
A sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. There are two types:

Pure Sequence: No jokers used.
Example: 5♥-6♥-7♥

Impure Sequence: Contains a joker as a substitute.
Example: 9♣-10♣-Joker (where Joker acts as J♣)

To declare a valid Rummy hand, at least one pure sequence is mandatory.

2. Sets (Groups)
A set consists of 3 or 4 cards of the same rank but different suits.
Example: 8♣-8♦-8♠

Jokers can also be used in sets to replace missing cards.

Jokers and Their Role

There are two types of jokers in Rummy:

Printed Jokers: Standard jokers in the deck.

Wild Jokers: A card randomly selected at the beginning of each game. All cards of that rank (regardless of suit) become wild jokers.

Jokers can be used to complete sequences (except the pure one) and sets, making them highly valuable.
